A couple of years ago, two of our most progressive clients came to RPR with a new vision about how MLS systems could work. They strongly believed that MLS systems should be offered in modules to make it easier and more practical for brokers and agents to be able to choose the MLS interface that works best for them. Tim Dain from the Austin Board of REALTORS® and Walt Baczkowski from the San Francisco Association of REALTORS® both saw the opportunity to de-couple the listing input, search and reporting functions from the database that houses all of the MLS information and listing data. When they proposed the idea a couple of years ago, the idea was just a vision. In fact, the same vision was outlined nearly 15 years ago by my former WAV Group partner, Mike Audet. The idea is not new, but until now nobody took the initiative to actually build it. It is very exciting for me to see that one of the industry’s long-standing MLS system and association management software providers has stepped up to help make Tim and Walt’s vision a reality in partnership with RPR. While the release does not outline specific deliverable dates for the program yet, it does suggest to me that leaders in our industry are committed to trying new things that will help evolve the MLS industry and hopefully continue to make it relevant. Here’s the official word from the press release: Rapattoni Corporation and Realtors Property Resource® (RPR®) have jointly announced that Rapattoni customers may be among the first real estate professionals with instant access to live listing data and other MLS resources through RPR’s Advanced Multi-List Platform™ (AMP™). “We’re looking to the future of the MLS business, anticipating the needs of our customers as well as the industry at large,” said Brian Tepfer, Chief Technology Officer at Rapattoni. “Our MLS is architected to facilitate integration with a broad spectrum of emerging technologies, allowing MLSs to pull listing data from multiple sources and present it in a single interface. The new AMP™ integration is a dynamic example of how our MLS software uses listing information from multiple databases.” This is a good first step toward a much more flexible and user-centric MLS experience in my view. It would be great if every broker could define their own unique blend of MLS modules that work best for the needs of […]

Howard Lund had a philosophy about lists. He said that it is great to be on the good ones, but don’t take too much pride in it. He shared his thoughts on this whenever I made honor roll, or was recognized for accomplishments in sports. It is the type of fatherly wisdom that sticks with you. I think that Mr. Swanepoel and his team does a good job in their selection – a process too difficult to imagine. Its an honor to receive the recognition, and I am especially proud of my partner, Marilyn Wilson. Her dedication to her trade and the people we work for is inspired. I rue the day when members of our firm are no longer on the list. It means that something terrible has happened or we have aged out of relevance. A big High 5 to our many clients that are represented on the list. And for those who did not make it, lets charge forth in 2016 to make a remarkable difference! Here is the link to read the Power 200. January 13, 2016 – San Juan Capistrano, CA. The annual Swanepoel POWER 200 2015/16 ranking the most power people in residential real estate was released today. Leaders from all the largest real estate companies in the United States and Canada, including Realogy, Zillow, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Keller Williams Realty, RE/MAX, Coldwell Banker, Move, Inc., and the National Association of REALTORS® are represented. Holding the number one spot for the third consecutive year is Richard A. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Realogy Holdings. Realogy owns many of the county’s leading brands, including: Coldwell Banker, Century 21, Sotheby’s International Realty, ERA Franchise Systems, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, and ZipRealty. With approximately 13,600 franchised and company-owned offices, and over 250,000 brokers and agents worldwide, Realogy touches one out of every four home sales in America. Moving up one spot to the second most powerful person in real estate is Ron Peltier, chairman and chief executive officer of HomeServices of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. HomeServices posted solid growth year over year while continuing to add new companies in 2015, the largest of which was $2.5 billion First Weber in Wisconsin, pushing their total agent count to over 70,000, generating over 550,000 transactions annually. Zillow Group chief executive officer Spencer Rascoff, Gary Keller, co-founder and chairman of Keller Williams Realty International, and Dale […]

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 18, 2015) – Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, the 4th largest real estate company in the U.S.A., invites the public to try the new website for the first time today. Working collaboratively with 1000Watt, the leading agency focused on real estate and mortgage branding, marketing and innovation, the new HowardHanna.com is widely regarded as the most powerful real estate site in the entire industry. HowardHanna.com achieves new milestones in real estate brokerage navigation by combining active listings, recent sales and public records data for properties within a clean, modern design that highlights the strength of the Howard Hanna brand. It is easy to navigate and provides the information and features that consumers love. “Why did we do this? Consumers want INFORMATION!” said Helen Hanna Casey, President of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “We challenged ourselves to break through the thinking that limits most real estate company websites. Why can’t a real estate website serve prospective sellers as well as buyers? Why can’t we display information on every property and not just those for sale? Why can’t our agents enhance the user experience through their own contributions? Our new site demonstrates what is truly possible.” The website delivers three industry firsts: 1. Combined search for active listings, recent sales and public property records The new HowardHanna.com offers consumers something they won’t find on any other website: the ability to get details on any property, whether it’s for sale, recently sold or off the market. By combining up-to-the-minute updates from over 30 MLSs with millions of public records, we can offer any consumer – buyer, seller, or a property owner thinking of selling, a complete picture of the housing market. And by offering all of this information on our site, it gives Howard Hanna agents the opportunity to connect with prospects online in new ways. Studies show that consumers who are ‘thinking of selling’ often seek price histories and recent sales prices to gauge the market. They can now get this information at HowardHanna.com, along with clear calls to action to also get the expert assistance of a Howard Hanna agent. 2. “Hanna View” neighborhood photos People don’t just buy homes, they buy a place to live their lives. That means they want to see what a community or neighborhood is like before they make the commitment. The Hanna View feature gives them that by displaying current photos of […]

Minneapolis, October 19, 2015: Brian N. Larson was inducted into the Council of Multiple Listing Services (CMLS) Hall of Fame at the CMLS Conference in Kansas City on October 8, 2015. According to CMLS, “The honor is a means of recognizing and acknowledging a lifetime of leadership, energy, and intellect that improves and elevates the real estate multiple listing service industry.” During its 58-year history, CMLS has been the trade association of the MLS industry in North America, now supporting 178 member organizations that serve more than one million subscribers. Larson is the fourth leader to be inducted into CMLS’s Hall of Fame. “To many of us, Brian has been a mentor, a counselor, a contributor, a confidant, an organizer, a director, an advocate, a leader, and a friend,” said Shelley Specchio, president of CMLS and CEO of Northern Nevada Regional MLS. “He has made enormous contributions to the MLS Industry, including the refinement and promotion of IDX or Broker Reciprocity, a national policy that empowers brokers to grant listing display rights to each other for advertising on the Internet.” Larson is “of counsel” to Larson Skinner PLLC, the law firm he founded more than 13 years ago. He has been an attorney and business adviser with a national reputation for serving the real estate vertical. The firm is pre-eminent among those serving real estate multiple listing services and trade associations. Recently, Partners Trust launched a new fully mobile responsive site designed to dynamically change for over 250 different screen sizes. Along with the “mobile first” web site, they launched new mobile apps for android and iOS. The design was done by 1000watt Consulting in collaboration with Partners Trust and the proprietary technology is provided by Booj. Booj (Be Original or Jealous) is the platform that powers The Enterprise Network. Booj is an interesting technology provider because they deliver a very good and well-supported solution that is exclusive to a single brokerage in a market place. I got to meet the team behind the technology last year when I was invited to take the stage and share my perspective on syndication at their annual conference. Many WAV Group broker clients are on the Booj platform and you can see the full list of brokers using their system here: http://www.independentre.com/members. 1000watt did a great job of focusing the site on sellers first – which was well executed by the development team across the entire consumer facing solution. Partners Trust’s communication strategy started with an internal rollout that included an all day Tech Summit at The W Hotel in Hollywood for the company and its agents. The campaign then moved to customers, media and then paid media at LA Times, Google, and Facebook to support the launch. Congratulations to Booj and Partners Trust on a great web site and solid communications strategy. It’s a great reminder that communications is a key component to any technology launch. By the way, it is our firm belief that technology always looks better when it is dressed in properties from Beverly Hills, CA. You can see the new site here: http://www.thepartnerstrust.com/ Check out the apps here: https://appsto.re/us/HxdS9.i ( iOS) https://play.google.com/store/ apps/details?id=com.activewebsite.partnerstrust ( Android) All too often, companies communicating new solutions to agents forget to communicate the new solution to consumers. Be mindful that there is a consumer story in launching a new service even when the application is not a consumer application. Obviously, launching a product or service that will be a new consumer benefit needs to be communicated to consumers. You would be amazed at how often brokers or MLSs will launch a new platform for the consumer benefit and not send out a press release; not market the change or benefits in the local media including radio, TV, and print. WAV Group communications can help. Our […]
In the real estate industry, the collection and distribution of real estate listing data has been a hot issue for many years, and The Great Lakes Repository (GLR) has made tremendous headway toward solving those data issues. The GLR is comprised of a group of MLSs and REALTOR® Associations (participants) in Michigan that have agreed to share listing data with other participants using a repository method of sharing. Under this method of sharing data, all participants of the GLR run their own MLSs; enforce their own set of rules; manage their own membership; control their own MLS products, but cooperate by sharing listing data in one central location. The sharing of listing data benefits all GLR Members and the consumer by providing all the listings data to all GLR Members, and at the same time eliminating the need for a REALTOR® to belong to more than one MLS, i.e.: offering MLS of choice. Over the last seven and a half years, the GLR has grown from zero to 11 Members all sharing data in their home database. The GLR recently finalized agreements with the eight (8) REALTOR® Associations that are Shareholders of Realcomp II Ltd., an MLS in Farmington Hills, MI. “We are excited to welcome these new Members to the GLR, giving the GLR a total of nineteen (19) Members representing twelve (12) MLSs sharing data,” said Dave DeRees, President of The Great Lakes Repository. Currently, the data is being mapped and is scheduled to go live on March 1, 2016. Once the new data is live, the GLR will be estimated to have over 55,000 active listings in the state, and is also estimated to have 67% of the REALTORS® in Michigan and 66% of all active and historical listings in the state. Powered by CURE Solutions Group, an MRIS subsidiary, the GLR is able to overcome the technical barriers associated with sharing MLS content through multiple geographic areas. This makes the GLR an indispensable resource for brokers and agents in the Great Lakes area. “MRIS is thrilled that the GLR is making great strides in expanding access to listing information across the state of Michigan,” said Jeff Jennings, MRIS Director of Strategic Alliances. “Over the past seven years, the GLR has proactively continued to make it easier for brokers and agents to access the information they need, and we look forward to their continued growth and success.” […]

Rapattoni has been the leader in Association Management Software (AMS) for decades. Historically an Association would host the Rapattoni solution, called Magic™, on hardware owned and maintained by the Association of REALTORS®. Associations did a pretty decent job of hosting, but managing hardware servers and security has become increasingly complex and expensive. Dallas based MetroTex Association of REALTORS® with 15,000 members was among the first group of five Associations to move to the new hosted solution. The new service maintains the name Rapattoni Magic, but adds the tag, Cloud AMS. Press Release Follows SIMI VALLEY, Calif., August 19, 2015 – Rapattoni Corporation (Rapattoni) announced today that the MetroTex Association of REALTORS® (MetroTex), located in Dallas, Texas, has migrated to Rapattoni’s Hosted Magic Association Management Software (AMS) service. MetroTex currently serves approximately 15,000 members throughout Dallas and North Texas. MetroTex has been using the Rapattoni AMS product for twenty-nine years, since 1986, and they are now the fifth Rapattoni customer to move to the new Hosted Magic AMS service. Rapattoni’s hosting service relieves real estate associations of server hardware costs and expensive software licensing for their AMS systems. With robust hosting at Rapattoni’s state-of-the-art data center, the service includes managed database backups, automatic Magic maintenance upgrades, and monitored scheduler service, as well as a hosted email server for Magic’s integrated communication features. Customers that use Rapattoni’s Internet Member Services (IMS) module also receive monitored uptime for their hosted IMS site. In addition to offering Hosted Magic AMS to customers, Rapattoni is currently developing Rapattoni Magic – Cloud AMS as the next generation of its industry- leading association management software. Cloud AMS will deliver a redesigned interface and a wide range of new features, including an export builder, Invoice Cloud payment portal integration, portability for selected features on iOS and Android, and a quick menu search for faster navigation.
